Applications

1. Drilling & Completion

Objective: To safely create and secure a wellbore for production.

Summary: This stage uses specialised chemicals—primarily in drilling fluids (mud) and cement slurries—to lubricate and cool the drill bit, carry rock cuttings to the surface, maintain wellbore pressure stability, and permanently isolate formation zones with a cemented casing. The focus is on achieving a stable, intact wellbore without damaging the reservoir's natural flow capacity.

 2. Subsea & Deepwater Systems

Objective: To ensure uninterrupted flow from seabed wells to surface facilities in extremely challenging environments.

Summary: Focused on flow assurance, chemicals are continuously injected to prevent solid blockages—like gas hydrates, wax, and scale—in inaccessible subsea pipelines and equipment. Treatments must be highly reliable and often injected via umbilicals, as physical intervention is prohibitively expensive or impossible in deep water.

3. Production & Well Integrity

Objective: To maximise and maintain hydrocarbon flow from the reservoir while protecting well infrastructure.

Summary: This application combines long-term downhole treatments (e.g., scale inhibitor "squeezes" into the reservoir) and continuous surface injection of corrosion inhibitors, biocides, and scale inhibitors. The goal is to manage deposition, corrosion, and microbial growth within the well tubing, flowlines, and wellhead to sustain production rates and prevent failures.

4. Surface Facilities

Objective: To separate and prepare wellstream fluids for sale or disposal.

Summary: Chemicals are used at the processing plant to break oil-water emulsions (**demulsifiers**), control foam, inhibit corrosion in vessels and pipelines, and remove residual impurities. This ensures the oil and gas meet pipeline specifications for water, salt, and sediment content, while protecting equipment in separators, heaters, and treaters.

5. Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) & Water Flooding

Objective: To increase the total amount of oil recovered from a reservoir.

Summary: This involves injecting specially treated water or advanced chemicals (polymers, surfactants) into the reservoir through injection wells. The focus is on protecting the injection system from scale, corrosion, and bacterial growth, and on improving reservoir sweep efficiency to mobilize and produce oil that would otherwise remain trapped.
